Lecture on incels and the manosphere with Lasse Josephsen.
Incels: From Loneliness to Toxic Community?
Journalist and author Lasse Josephsen is one of Norway's leading experts on internet culture and its flourishing subcultures. To quote Josephsen himself, he focuses on “groups and movements that to many may appear marginal and obscure but in the past decade have tended to hit us square in the face in various ways, either through politics or crime.”
In recent times, the so-called "manosphere," an ideological online community, has gained attention, thanks to figures like Andrew Tate. This includes the incel culture. The term "incel," a contraction of "involuntary celibate," describes individuals who perceive themselves as living in involuntary celibacy. For many, this state becomes a central part of their identity, influencing their mental health and sense of belonging and contributing to the legitimization of misogyny.
Once dismissed and laughed off as an unserious phenomenon driven by adolescent and contrarian boys, the incel community has now become a starting point for discussions about male loneliness, social exclusion, and radical political movements.
Having spent countless hours as a fly on the wall in these nocturnal environments, Josephsen possesses deep insight into what goes on in the darker corners of the internet. With a humorous perspective, he offers both enlightenment and entertainment. Together, we take a deep dive into the manosphere and explore how the incel phenomenon has become a symptom of our times.
