Ella Marie // Skala
Ella Marie is a Sámi artist and activist from Tana in Finnmark. Through seven years as the front figure of the band ISÁK, she has been celebrated for her energetic stage presence and passionate expression of joik. In 2024, Ella Marie debuted as a solo artist at Riddu Riđđu and Øyafestivalen, presenting timeless and powerful pop music in Northern Sámi.
With over 245 million streams on Spotify and collaborations with artists like Alan Walker, Ella Marie toured the world with ISÁK from 2016 to 2023. She gained national recognition in 2018 when she won Stjernekamp. Since then, she has used her music to advocate for Sámi rights and has become a prominent symbol of Sámi pride and culture. Today, she is also recognized as one of the leading activists and advocates for rights in Scandinavia, following years of efforts to protect Sámi lands.
Ella Marie is also a critically acclaimed actress, author, and podcaster, and has appeared in several documentaries. She has received numerous awards, including the Áillohaš Music Prize, the Fritt Ord Honor, the Nordic Pioneer Prize, the Zola Prize, and the By:larmer of the Year award. So far in 2024, she has released four singles and is currently working on her debut album. In the new year, she will embark on a tour with her band across Scandinavia, bringing with her powerful protest joik, a wealth of emotions, and strong messages, but above all, immense pride in the rich Sámi cultural heritage.
