Beau Travail, Claire Denis' masterpiece from the 1990s, explores jealousy and downfall in the French Foreign Legion through Officer Galoup’s intense rivalry with a new recruit.
Beau Travail is the breakthrough film of French director Claire Denis and has been hailed as one of the most original and beautiful films of the 1990s. In the film, an officer in the French Foreign Legion, Galoup, reflects on his life as a troop leader in the Gulf of Djibouti. When a new recruit, Sentain, captures the attention of their commander, Galoup’s jealousy is sparked, ultimately leading to the downfall of both him and Sentain.
The film is known for its poetic beauty, visual style, and use of music, and it explores themes such as friendship, sexuality, and isolation.
