ISFiT + Friby Trondheim: Litterær salong om oversettelse

ISFiT and Friby Trondheim are inviting you to a literary salon focusing on translation and its effect in spreading knowledge across borders. The panel consists of Asieh Amini, Marte Huke and Mathias Reinholt Samuelsen, and is led by Friby’s project coordinator Adria Scharmen. Following the discussion there will be poetry recitation by Amini and Huke. There will also be an open question round where you in the audience can participate. The friby arrangement is organized by Norwegian PEN, and in order for a writer to be considered for the arrangement she/he has to be demonstrably threatened or persecuted in their homeland because of their writing. Norwegian PEN is the norwegian department of PEN International, the world’s largest organization for writers and their freedom of speech, and was established in 1921 as an international literary association working for authors’ right to freedom of speech.

Asieh Amini is an Iranian poet, journalist, feminist and internationally recognized human rights activist. In 2005 Amini’s first book of poetry was selected by UNESCO’s office in Tehran as the best poetry collection from young and emerging Iranian poets. After her imprisonment following a demonstration in 2007, Amini continued her work and activism under pressure. Following a controversial presidential election in 2009, she left her home and eventually came to reside as an ICORN guest writer in Trondheim (2010 - 2012). Her other accolades include the Human Rights Watch Hellmann/Hammett award (2009), the Oxfam Novib/PEN award (2012), and the Ord i Grenseland Prize (2014). She published her first poetry collection in Norwegian in 2011, entitled Kom ikke til mine drømmer med gevær (“Don’t come into my dreams with guns”, translated into Norwegian by Nina Zandjani).

Marte Huke is a norwegian poet, author and translator, and debuted with the poetry collection Delta in 2002. Huke studied Literature and German at the university of Bergen, creative writing at Skrivekunstakademiet in Bergen and Litterär Gestaltning in Gothenburg. She founded the Æ Å Trondheim Literature festival in cooperation with other poets in Trondheim. She worked alongside Amini in translating Amini’s works to Norwegian.

Mathias Reinholt Salberg Samuelsen is a norwegian poet, translator and editor. He grew up in Trondheim and resided in the Trondheim’s author house Adrianstua from 2013 to 2018. Samuelsen has an MA in literary studies and is a PhD candidate at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU. He has also studied creative writing and japanese. In 2013 he and Rune F. Hjemås established the publishing house Beijing Trondheim, and since 2015 he has worked as an artistic advisor for the Norwegian Literature Festival in Lillehammer.

Adria Scharmen has over the last years worked as an advisor and project coordinator for newly resettled refugees who attend the Introduction program in the Municipality of Trondheim. She has lived and studied in the USA, Spain, China, and in Costa Rica, where she received her MA in Peace and Conflict Studies from the UN mandated University for Peace. Most of her personal work focuses on culture, literature, innovation, and social justice, especially for minorities.
