Samfundsmøte: Addicted to plastic

Whales on plastic diets and the age of plastic is replaced by plastic picking and plogging (google it!). The plastic problem is constantly debated and discussed, and it is close to impossible to avoid pictures and articles warning us about how t our huge plastic consumption is destroying our planet. Most of us are both aware and conscious of the damage plastic makes on the environment- “hey! We recycle!”. We know this is a big issue, but what damage is it really doing? Did you know studies show that there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050? Or that every minute 15 tons of new plastic ends up in the ocean? And how well do you know microplastic, the real danger?

But plastic is also popular for a reason. After all- life in plastic, it’s fantastic. It’s lightweight, strong and can be shaped, laminated or tailored both physically or chemically. Plastic can be used in almost any context. To blame plastic alone won’t necessarily be the solution to the problem. When looking at its multifunctionality, is the material really the problem, or is it our consumption and lack of recycling of it that needs to change? Will we be able to replace plastic?

With us this evening we have David Pettersen Eidsvold, scientist at NIVA specialicing in plastic. We also have Kristoffer Gunnar Paso with us, who is a professor at the institute for chemical engineering at NTNU.
