[PRIDE WEEK] Samfundsmøte: PRIDE
What is the status of LGBT rights in the world today? According to Amnesty International same sex intercourse is prohibited in 76 countries, and can in worst case be punished by death. 54 member countries of the UN have signed a declaration which opposes LGBT rights. In Chechnya gay men are sent to camps where they are tortured and killed. In USA President Trump has tweeted to ban transsexual persons to serve the armed forces.
On a daily basis LGBT persons all around the world are facing numerous ways of discrimination and violation of the human rights. How is everyday life for persecuted LGBT persons? What do you risk by coming out? In collaboration with Trondheim PRIDE and Amnesty Region Midt we invite to Samfundsmøte about what challenges the LGBT movement faces today.
Sabrina Petra Ramet will attend this meeting to talk about the campaign against transsexual people in the United States. She is a professor in political science at NTNU. She was born a biological man, and had a sex change in 1980. Before this she served the US Air Force.
The Canadian ambassador in Norway, Artur Wilczynski, will talk about his own experience as a openly gay married man in an official office. Artur is actively engaged in the PRIDE movement, and will talk about why PRIDE is still important today.
Patricia Kaatee is political advisor in Amnesty International, where she is responsible Amnesty's work on women rights, gender, and work related to sexual and reproductive rights and health. She will talk about LGBTs rights in Eastern Europe.
The meeting will be held in English.
