Panel Discussion: The Rise of Right-Wing Populism in Germany
Germany and the AfD - A Symptom of a New Europe?
This Panel Discussion is in Norwegian
Since World War II, Germany has limited the use of national symbols, kept defense spending low, and cracked down hard on nationalist movements. In issues such as the refugee crisis and the euro crisis, Germany has taken a leading role and has been viewed by many as a moral leader. However, in recent years, the post-war image of Germany has started to crack. Like the rest of Europe, the far-right has gained significant support in Germany as well. In this year’s election, the party received over 20 percent of the vote and is now Germany’s second-largest party. Why are German voters drawn to the far-right? What role do German identity and history play in today’s nationalist movements? And what consequences will this political shift have for the future of Germany and Europe?
Join the panel discussion at Vuelie on April 8th. The panel will include Astrid Sverresdotter Dypvik and Frank Rossavik.
Astrid Sverresdotter Dypvik is a journalist and historian. She is an advisor for the think tank Agenda and has written several books on contemporary German history, including “The Dark Germany” and “That Was the GDR.” She has previously been the editor of the journal Syn og Segn and the debate editor for Klassekampen.
Frank Rossavik is an author and commentator for Aftenposten. He has previously been a press secretary for the Socialist Left Party (SV) and communications director for the European Movement. He has published 10 books, including a biography of Einar Førde, which won the Brage Prize. In 2010, he was named "Opinion Leader of the Year" by the Oslo Press Association.
