ISFiT presents: Movie screening The Power of Nature: Human Wild (2022) + Q&A with director Marthe Thorshaug // Vuelie
In Human Wild, a group of people gathers to explore their primal instincts in encounters with animal packs. When confronted with a wolf pack, their fear and hierarchy are put to the test. The film, a hybrid of nature film, documentary, and thriller, is created by Marthe Thorshaug, known for her unique cinematic language that challenges the boundaries between reality and fiction.
In Human Wild, we follow a group of humans as they encounter other animal groups. The setting resembles a training course where six people gather to explore their primal animal instincts. They must determine their rank, understand the instincts that hold the group together, and discover new sides of themselves. But when the humans come face-to-face with the wolf pack and fear sets in, what happens then?
Human Wild is a hybrid film with references to nature films, documentaries, and thrillers.
Marthe Thorshaug (born 1977) is a filmmaker and visual artist, educated at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Norway. She is best known for her distinctive films, which have been screened at numerous art institutions, museums, and film festivals worldwide, including the Musée du quai Branly and the Whitechapel Gallery. Human Wild received an award at the Arctic Film Festival in 2021. Thorshaug lives and works on the small farm where she grew up, in Vangsåsen outside Hamar, Norway.
A recurring theme in Thorshaug’s films is the relationship between humans, animals, and mythology. Through her productions, she has developed a unique cinematic language, deliberately blending elements from different genres. Her films often create an unpredictable atmosphere, where the line between reality and fiction becomes blurred.
