Sundayscreening: Love & Pop (1998)

An experimental Japanese coming-of-age film about the student Hiromi, who engages in enjo kōsai (sugar dating) to finance an expensive ring.

Love & Pop is an experimental Japanese coming-of-age film directed by Hideaki Anno. The film follows the student Hiromi and her three friends, who engage in enjo kōsai—translated as "compensated dating," where they date older men in exchange for payment. Hiromi is drawn deeper into this world as she tries to gather money for a ring she desires. The film depicts the girls' complex feelings of loneliness, insecurity, and youthful exploration, while also offering a critical commentary on consumer culture and the objectification of young women in Japan.
