Wednesdayjazz: SHAKAI

SHAKAI - beautiful, warm, playful, and quirky. Come to our Wednesday Jazz at Samfundet and see SHAKAI!

On June 7th, Shakai released their second album on the renowned Is It Jazz? Records, which has received great reviews. After several years of inactivity, the band has reformed with a new lineup and fresh music. They are now set to perform at venues such as Trondheim Studentersamfunn, Salt, Voss Jazz Club, and a series of concerts at jazz clubs in Møre og Romsdal, organized by the Vestnorsk Jazz Centre.

Their music and lyrics cover everything from life's big questions, small stories, reflections on the past, and hopes for the future. The sound shifts from beautiful and warm to playful and quirky. They blend various influences, play with genre definitions, and invite listeners on a journey into their own strange, little universe.

The band name, Shakai, which comes from the Japanese word for "society," fits well for this quintet of musicians. They are rooted in improvisation but refuse to be confined by genre limitations. Instead, they let the music speak for itself, giving each member the freedom to express their own creativity.

The band consists of bassist and bandleader Eline Rafteseth (Nh3, Duesund), saxophonist Elisabeth Lid Trøen (Bergen Big Band, Trøen/Arnesen Quartet), vocalist Gabriela Garrubo (Metteson, Amalie Holt Kleive), guitarist Simen Walle (Atari, Nelly), and drummer Kenneth Kapstad (Spidergawd, Møster!).
