ISFiT: GURLS // Dokkhuset
GURLS is made up of three of Norway’s most sought-after musicians –all of them taking what they themselves confess is a musical holiday. With their playful energy, sassy self confidence and multitudes of experience in their own bands and projects, together these three consummate musicians have formed a gently funky unit that communicates spontaneously and goes deep.
Tickets are sold from October 25th, 12.00!
It’s not often you find such a huge amount of indisputably cutting-edge jazz potential packed into a single trio, but with GURLS, that’s exactly what you get. Wait –did we just say ‘potential’? These prize-winning people have moved far beyond that stage. They’ve already started realising their massive potential and were already sounding like a finished product a long time ago.
Rohey Taalah, from Oslo,is currently one of Norway’s hottest vocalists. She has taken the Norwegian musical world by storm in the past year with her band, called simply Rohey. In recognition of their passionate soul jazz sound, they received the Trondheim Jazz Festival’s Talent Award in 2015, which was awarded to ‘a free and fearless singer with genuine curiosity and tremendous energy in everything she does. She is utterly distinctive and has a powerful expressive force, and is in addition a very talented songwriter.
’Ellen Andrea Wang is a prolific bass player and singer who has spent several years recording and touring with her own jazz bands Pixel and EAW. On top of releasing two solo albums of electronic pop-jazz, Divingand Blank Out, she has collaborated with none other than Sting as well as the legendary jazz drummer Manu Katché. Wang received the prestigious DNB Awardat Kongsberg Jazz Festival in 2015. One prominent Norwegian music critic has declared that ‘Ellen Andrea Wang is broadening the scope of Norwegian jazz.’
Award winning saxophonist Hanna Paulsberg has enjoyed great success with her own band, Hanna Paulsberg Concept, which has released three albums to date. Paulsberg has also worked with jazz legends such as Chick Corea, Bugge Wesseltoft and Bobo Stenson. Paulsberg was selected as an ambassador for the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in 2015, and was awarded the title Young Nordic Jazz Comet in 2011. Kim Klev, a reviewer for the newspaper Dagbladet, wrote the following after the Molde Jazz Festival in 2017: ‘What really makes my soul vibrate,’ said the reviewer for Dagbladet newspaper of her 2017 Molde Jazz Festival performance,‘is the way Hanna Paulsberg plays the saxophone. I have never yet witnessed her at a concert where she didn’t add something extra.
